Are harmful ingredients hiding in your makeup? Find out at Skin Deep.

Skin DeepThe Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit research organization based in Washington, DC, has created Skin Deep, a searchable database of cosmetics that assess their relative safety based on their ingredients. Uh oh. Both my hair dye and my face cream come up a toxic 7 out of 10.  On the bright side, I’ll have a beautiful corpse.

Look more “Y&H” (young and hip) and less “OL” (old lady) with help from Charla Krupp.

How Not to Look OldCharla Krupp, former beauty director at Glamour magazine and editor at In Style magazine, has written a book that is timely for me: How Not to Look Old: Fast and Effortless Ways to Look 10 Years Younger, 10 Pounds Lighter, 10 Times Better (Springboard Press, 2008, ISBN-13: 978-0446581141). In it, she first asks her readers to define their beauty maintenance level. In other words, how much time and money are we willing to spend in order to look better?

Krupp is a high maintenance gal who apparently does nothing but work on her looks. Although she does not endorse plastic surgery (She quotes the designer Isaac Mizrahi: “If you want to look seventy, boy, get a face-lift.”), she is a strong advocate of expensive Botox treatments and fillers.

Krupp summarizes her beauty tips in this article from Oprah’s online magazine. Among her suggestions is that we ditch our matched librarian suits. Instead, we should wear the jackets with a variety of bottoms. In addition, we can lighten our lipstick, pluck our eyebrows, whiten our teeth, and squeeze into some Spanx® (http://www.spanx.com) to smooth our lumpy torsos.
